Flirt; to behave as though sexually attracted to someone, but playfully rather than with serious intentions.

Whether for serious or playful intentions we all do it conscious of it or not, subtle variations in body language like the flicking of the hair, making eye contact, gentle touching, open stances, closeness to one another, laughing at jokes that just aren’t funny, teasing, you get the picture. Depending on how direct a person chooses to be, male or female, the intentions in the general sense of the meaning are only suggestive of a mildly deeper intimacy than the actual relationship between the parties would or could justify.

A young woman in earlier days who flirted playfully was referred to as a coquette or in slang a cock tease, while a male flirt is called a womanizer or player. Terms that have taken on a whole new meaning by today’s standards. 

According to social anthropologist Kate Fox, there are two main types of flirting: flirting for fun and flirting with intent. Flirting for fun can take place between friends, co-workers, or total strangers that wish to get to know each other. This type of flirting does not intend to lead to sexual intercourse or romantic relationship, but increases the bonds between two people.

Flirting with intent plays a role in the mate-selection process. The person flirting will send out signals of sexual availability to another, and expects to see the interest returned in order to continue flirting.

We flirt for a variety of reasons, reasons entirely your own, however flirting for amusement with no further intentions can come with consequences from being perceived for something more serious or believed as cheating if the active party is involved in a relationship. Wiping all that clean, free of intentions, is simply harmless fun across all cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and age groups across all generations. Consider it a boost to the ego, an uplift to an otherwise bad day, or simply a sweet compliment graciously accepted from all sexes.

An all to perfect example in actions alone, and miles away from connotations in this article is the eagerness of adoring fathers and their daughters, who are quite simply their daddy’s little girl! Eyes, smiles, and the ever appreciated hugs!

There is no problem in whispering to someone how nice they smell, or how good they look. Complimenting a person on their choice of outfit, the car they drive, their jewellery, even a person’s figure or physique that is starting to take shape from all that hard work at the gym. Throw the thumbs with a smile and blow a light kiss, all good in how you present it. Trust me, I’m all for it!
