Here in Vancouver as we near the end of summer the temperature seems to fluctuate quite dramatically, as do the humidity levels. Just when you think you have it under control as to what to wear, good old mother nature throws in a curve ball just to keep us on our toes. Over dressed we hit the streets only to soon find ourselves warmer than we wish to be, cutting a swathe through the thick, hot, humid air. The marathon man, and no I’m not talking about athletes, although this kind of man fancies himself that. Manscaping is a good thing, but these days it has been taken to extremes in my eyes and the beholders of many others. What started off as a process to clean up the hair from unruly eyebrows, legs, backs and butt crack, seems to have extended beyond that to the forearms of so many overly processed pretty boys. Looking at smooth forearms evokes images of prepubescent boys, that make even the most tolerant give their heads a shake. Hairy forearms on a man, that’s what’s sexy this week.

Life at the sex shop isn’t always about the young, beautiful, and physically fit venturing through the doors for the latest and greatest of sex toys on the market. It’s a variety of folks that come from all walks of life, of all backgrounds, cultural beliefs, religions, anything and everything, you name it, we see it. I realized long ago working as a sex educator and at the sex shop, that sex doesn’t stop as a person ages, let alone when a person loses a loved one. It is the accessory that adorns our heads, and for those of us that have it, we’ve spent, by the times our lives on this plane have fizzled out, thousands of dollars washing, conditioning, cutting, chemically treating, and styling it. Our hair. The crowning glory for many, century after century the first thing noticed on a person before a wardrobe, and hygiene. Shiny, lustrous, healthy hair, styled to perfection always garners the attention of the passing admirer, but a head of hair tousled to extremes fresh from a bedroom romp alway gets the double take and that’s what’s sexy this week.

Hair that begins as a work of art from the ritual of a 15 to 20 minute prep, ready for the world reveal, a part of daily life, quickly settles as the elements of the day permeate every strand weighing it down, dulling it’s sheen. Now that cell phones are, for the most part, a worldwide device, communication has gotten just that much easier. In the early days of the phone there was a combination of letters and numbers used to identify where your call was to be directed after calling in to an operator. The movie, Butterfield 8, with Elizabeth Taylor exemplified that ever so perfectly, a film I highly recommend!

Beyond all that dialling, pressing buttons with numbers on them is texting. The not so new method of communication. Texting, the pressing of buttons with letters on them, we all know what it is, and do it religiously. Although first designed to be used for another reason, it morphed into a form of communication the inventors never intended to be used the way it is today, for SEXXXTING! (my spelling and I am sticking to it!!) What older folk called phone sex, only sexxxting leaves little to the imagination. (more…)
